HEY RHEA, CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING BIG AND SPLASHY FOR THE MANGO CONTEST?"

The tree was made from cardboard tubes and butcher paper, and the mangos were made from paper mache and plastic Easter eggs, leaves were designed on the computer and cut out. This project took about 12 hours including formatting the big banner and setting up the tree. The produce team set out the real mangos.

The store was number one in the region for sales during this promotion.

"HEY, CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING COOL OUT OF CANS AND NOT SPEND MORE THAN $800 ON THE SETUP?"

A team member with a degree in architecture helped me design this display. I scoured the grocery aisles for cans that had the right colors and fit into our budget. This display had to be partially rebuilt daily because we sold so many cans of soup to help a food pantry in the area.
This display took a team of 3 about 6 hours to build.

"RHEA, CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING FOR THE TOM'S SALE, LIKE A GIANT SHOE?"

I actually made the pair of shoes so I had enough for a secondary display. This shoe stayed on display for 2 years. Its made of corrugated cardboard and acrylic paint. approx 4 feet long.

"WE NEED SOMETHING BIG FOR VALENTINE'S DAY TO GO OVER THE ROSES AND TRY NOT TO SPEND MUCH"

20 cardboard hearts of various sizes and dangles of paint chip samples hung from the ceiling, the hearts took about an hour each to make. I built them over a period of a few weeks as I found time.

"HEY, CAN YOU MAKE SOMETHING BIG IN THE CAFE FOR WHOLE PLANET MONTH?"

It took a team of 4 to blow up the weather balloon and hang it from the ceiling. We covered the balloon with plaster strips, and then I painted it.Total time 8 hours. This display won a regional award and we exceeded our fundraising goal for the store.

AN IDEA TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE DISPLAY

I repurposed the 8 foot earth by adding 4 foot paper mache bees and netting to the display to showcase how dependent the earth is on bees for Earth Month.

"HEY RHEA, CAN YOU DO SOMETHING WITH OUR QUALITY STANDARDS FOR SEAFOOD?"

I had been thinking about a big 3D fish for some time when this idea came together. I started a 4 foot fish, but realized that was too small, so this one is an 8 footer. The head and tail move on  zip tie hinges. It took about 8 hours to complete including the hand lettering on all sides.  Its been up for about a year.

parm crown underside_edited.jpg

"HEY RHEA, CAN WE HAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR THE FRESH PARMESAN TABLE?"

"It's good to be king" is a tagline from Whole Foods Market and the crown was made with giant strips of paper made from recycled sale banners, like the bubble gum wrappers we used to make bracelets from in school.
It took about 5 hours and its been hanging for a year.

"HEY RHEA, CAN WE PAINT SOMETHING OVER THE FRONT DOORS FOR HALLOWEEN?"

The assistant marketer and I took about 4 hours to paint this monster. We pretreated the glass with hairspray for easy paint removal, and used roofing paper for the hair.

"CAN WE DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR EARTH MONTH THIS YEAR?"

This one I designed completely on the computer. Each window was a separate poster, the math was tricky to get your eye to track the hemisphere.
The theme  this year was pollinators.
